Week 3 - Sustainable Development & Innovation Management

Brief Overview

Sustainable Development - Prof Shahi start this topic with a creative video that is quite eye opening. The video tell us that the traditional linear model of industrialization brought economic well-being at the cost of environmental well-being. It said that if we don't change our industry model, we will need more than one planet to fulfill our needs in the future. So the best solutions that is proposed is by adopting "cyclical" industrial model, which is Sustainable Development. By adopting this model, not only an opportunity of growth and innovation will present, but also economic and and environmental well-being will be assured.

Innovation Management - An interesting quote by Tom Peters used to start off this topic. An interestingly true quotes about life and innovation. Moving on the the concept, quite number of important concept were told. From the concept of Valley, Summit and Cloud to the RDA concept of taking creativity to reality and how to do a successful innovation with the support of the pyramid of innovation. So basically the concept of Valley, Summit and Cloud opportunities is that valley opportunities is where the knowledge and technology involved is very limited with a low entry barrier, thus there are many competitors whereas summit opportunities is knowledge and technology intensive, the barrier to entry is very high, and thus not many competitors in this opportunity. Cloud opportunity is quite different with the other two, it is the place where there are no market yet for the product produced in this opportunity, although the knowledge and technology involved are very high end. However in the future, cloud opportunity could be well received with very high demand as it is becoming summit opportunity.

Key Takeaways

I learn a lot from last week class. It was very insightful, especially the topic of Innovation Management. One advise from Prof Shahi that I still remember until now is that if we someday become entrepreneurs, we must aim for Summit Opportunity, because it is where the demand is high, the money is good and the product is much appreciated. Then after we succeed in the summit opportunity, we should head for Cloud Opportunity, because it is the 'next level' of innovation and the next-to-be hot market. It is not wise to head for valley opportunity, because almost everyone aim for that and able to do that.
Another interesting insight that Prof Shahi shared with us that leave a deep impression in me is that, innovation usually happen when a person who are trained in one field go into other field that he is unfamiliar with and try to solve a problem in that field. This is logically true and without need of further explanation have already given me much insight
Other interesting point that Prof shared with us is when he try to explain Research-Development-Application with us by told us what his Japanese friend told him. His friend told him that Research is similar to Dream, a creative idea that is not real, at least yet. Application is similar to Reality, a real thing. And between those, there is Development, process to make Research into Application, that he described as 'Nightmare', this could literary mean nightmare, something that wake us from our dream or we can see it as a terrible process to go through to develop idea into reality.

The lecture last week was very insightful for me, thus I give 9/10. The time spent to explain us the concept, the way Prof Shahi explain the concept and the presentations by each students was very good for me. There is no further comment from me, it was good.
